SESSION SUMMARY:
IAAF World Youth Championships begin in Ostrava - Day One Morning Report
Wednesday 11 July 2007

Ostrava, Czech Republic - The fifth IAAF World Youth Championships got underway as the sun desperately tried to make its way through the clouds here in Ostrava. Although the forecasted rain did materialize mid way through this morning session it didn’t last long and most events were held in dry weather.

A very chilly wind steadily blew throughout the rounds of the boys’ 110m Hurdles, the first event of the competition and it was a 2.1 metre per second tail wind which prevented American Wayne Davis’ 13.38, the fastest time of this morning heats to be registered as a new World Youth leading time of the year.

“ I hit a few hurdles but I am satisfied with my new personal best,” said Davies. “My idol is World record holder Liu Xiang. The flight to Ostrava was quite good, I feel OK and I feel no pressure on me.”

Winner of heat 2 Davis had an impressive winning margin of more than five metres over runner-up Denis Semenov of Kazakhstan whose 13.87 were also good enough to advance to this afternoon’s semi-finals.

USA’s William Wynne who declared at yesterday’s press conference that he was only using the 110m Hurdles to improve his speed for his more favoured event, the 400m Hurdles, proved his rhythm is just about right as he cruised to win his heat in a legal 13.39, the World Youth Leading time of the year.

The American pair looks poised to extend the country’s domination at the event in these championships following on the footsteps of Jason Richardson, winner in 2003 and Cordera Jenkins, winner in 2005 as Daniel Martin of Australia, the next best qualifier of this morning heats was almost half a second slower in 13.83.

All favourites advance to Shot Put final

With six athletes throwing over the 19.20 metres qualifying standard to advance to this afternoon’s first final of the championships, the boys’ Shot Put is expected to be highly competitive.

World Youth leader Mykyta Nesterenko of Ukraine had a massive first round effort which landed well beyond the qualifying standard materialized in the infield by a red tape but his shot landed just outside the sector. It didn’t take him long to set the record straight as he put together a 19.81m effort with his second throw.

Meanwhile, Germany’s David Storl whose 20.44m heave was the best of this morning’s rounds was one of no fewer than seven athletes to throw beyond the qualification standard with their opening efforts!

The Championships record of 21.45 set by China’s Feng Liu back in 2003 is likely to fall in this afternoon’s final which includes six of the seven top performers of the year with American Sean Tabor (19.50), Uzbekistan’s Sergey Dementev (19.24) and China’s Bin Sun (18.91) being the only non-Europeans to advance to the final.

Jin and the rest…Girls’ Discus Throw final shapes up

This year’s best youth thrower Yuanyuan Jin of China easily advanced to the girls’ Discus Throw final which will be held this afternoon here in Ostrava. The 17-year-old thrower whose personal best 57.58m is almost four metres better than any other competitor in the field is the outstanding favourite to win the gold medal in an event which her country woman Ma Xuenjun won in Debrecen 2001 with what is still the Championships record 55.26m.

If there is anyone who could challenge Jin that would be Croatia’s Sandra Perkovic who topped the list of qualifiers in this morning rounds with a first round effort of 52.54m, more than one and a half metre below her personal best.

Germany’s Julia Fischer and Great Britain’s Shaunagh Brown the only other athletes in the field who have already reached the 51 metres barrier will also line-up in the final although Brown had a disaster qualification round with two fouls and a 45.07m best throw which fortunately for the 17-year-old was one of the 12 best marks this morning.

Oceania will also be represented in the final with the Australian pair of Kimberly Mulhall and Vika Lolo - following on the footsteps of 2005 World Youth champion Dani Samuels (AUS) - and New Zealand’s Te Rina Keenan.

British Girls dominate 100m heats

Britain’s Asha Philip and Ashlee Nelson were the fastest qualifiers in the girls’ 100m first round heats with times of 11.61 and 11.70 respectively. Although slightly slower, Nelson whose elder brother Alexander was the 200m bronze medallist at last year’s World Junior Championships in Beijing looked the strongest of the pair as she eased up in the last 20 metres of her heat despite a head wind of 0.8m/s.

Second on the World Youth lists behind Philip, USA’s Ashton Purvis ran an easy 11.74 to win the first of nine heats with Brazil’s Rosangela Santos, the third fastest youth sprinter this year also looking very strong as she dominated heat 3 in 11.72.

There were a total of 10 personal bests including a 12.11 run by local favourite Klara Kolomaznikova who advanced to tonight’s second round as one of the fastest losers.

Allistar Clarke – The new Kim Collins?

There were no major casualties in the boys’ 100m first round as Dexter Lee ran impressively to clock 10.55, the fastest time of this morning heats. The 16-year-old powerful Jamaican had more than three tenths of a second to spare over his heat runner-up Matic Molicnik of Slovenia.

Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Allistar Clarke was the second quickest with a personal best 10.58 ran with a tail wind of 2 metres per second. Running strongly in heat four, Clarke whose more famous compatriot Kim Collins won the World senior title in 2003, out-dipped Po-Yu Pan of Chinese Tapei who also recorded a new personal best time of 10.63.

France’s Christophe Lemaître (10.62) was another one of seven athletes to dip under 10.70 with national record holder Vaclav Zich setting a new Czech Youth standard of 10.65 in the eleventh and final heat.

“The new Czech record is a beautiful surprise for me. Even though it was only the first round I feel I have the power to run fast. I would be satisfied if I reached the final and I hope I can manage to beat the Americans and the Jamaicans,” said Zich.

First two events in Boys’ Octathlon concluded

The morning session also included the boys’ Octathlon 100m and Long Jump events, the all-round athletes returning to the track this afternoon to compete in the Shot Put and 400m.

Spain’s Eusebio Caceres started on a high winning the 100m in 10.73 and the Long Jump with a personal best 7.57m to lead with 1874 points after two events.

Trailing in second, Czech Jaroslav Hedvicak opened up with a couple of personal bests (10.84 100m and 7.11m Long Jump) for a total of 1737 points, 39 points ahead of Australia’s Adam Bevis who also improved on his 100m and Long Jump personal bests.

Austria’s Dominik Distelberger whose personal best 5987 points is the best of the field currently lies in seventh position almost 250 points behind Caceres.

Qualify for the Semifinals (Wed. evening)

Kennedy - Wayne Davis II (Southeast, Raleigh, N.C.) and William Wynne (McEachern, Powder Springs, Ga.) got the U.S. off to a flying start with the two fastest times in the first round. Davis dominated heat two with a 13.38 that was aided by a just over the allowable wind of 2.1 meters per second. Denis Semenov of Kazakhstan was second at 13.87 for the fourth fastest time of the round. Wynne was up next in the third heat and he had no trouble winning easily with a wind legal time of 13.39. Daniel Martin of Australia was second at 13,83 for the third fastest time of the morning. Seven runners broke 14 seconds while the slowest qualifying time was 14.44. The rest of the world runs over 36 inch hurdles while the U.S. uses the U.S. high school height of 39 inches, which could be an advantage. Davis’ best over the 39 inch hurdles is 13.65 while Wynne has run 13.72. Both Davis and Wynne will be shooting for the meet record of 13.26 set by Ladji Doucoure of France in the First World Youth championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 1999.
Boys 110m Hurdles, Round 1 (at this level, 36" hurdles are used).

Spier -
Heat 1 - Won by Cornel Bananau of Romania, who held his form against a charging Hansle Parchment of Jamaica (who didn't), with Bananau running 13.88 against Parchment's 13.95. Both advance to the next round.

Heat 2 - Wayne Davis, the sophomore from Eddie Harden's great program at Southeast Raleigh (HS) in North Carolina (and National sophomore record holder over the 39" hurdles) made it look easy, cruising to an easy 13.38 win. It would have been the World Youth leader had it not been aided by 2.1 mps wind. The meet record of 13.26 is certainly within reach, as is the World Youth record of 13.22. Wayne won graciously, shaking hands with ALL the other athletes in the race (I'm reminded of Wayne's father's reaction at the Nike Outdoor Nationals when it was announced that Wayne had just set the National Sophomore class record. Mr. Davis is an official who works many of the meets in the area. "That's my son!", he exclaimed).

(One of the young volunteers just asked if I needed anything. I asked for water. She brought me a 1.5 liter bottle. You know how big that is?! It'll take me all day to drink it).

Heat 3 - William Wynne (Mc Eachern, Powder Springs, GA) had some competition over the first half of the race from Martin Mazac of the Czech Republic and and Daniel Martin of Australia. Wynne pulled away after the fifth hurdle for an impressive 13.39 win. The wind was legal (+0.4) so he gets the World Youth lead.

Heat 4 - Darn it. Giovanni Mantovani of Italy was leading for 8 hurdles before crashing and burning. I was all set to say that "Mantovani orchestrated a perfect race" (those who are post sixties would not understand that anyway; those who are might find a slight bit of humor there - Mantovani. Orchestra. Get it?). Andreas Martinsen of Denmark took this race in a less than stellar 14.19.

Discus Qualifying Round
Top 12 Qualify

Kennedy -
Talk about nail biting competition in a qualifying round. Group A opened up with four automatic qualifiers in Jin Yuanyuan of China at 166-5, Julia Fischer of Germany at 162-2, Mariya Koshkaryova of Ukraine at 153-6 and Lolo Vika of Australia at 152-9. Meanwhile Becky O’Brien (Greely, Cumberland, Me.) got off a first round throw of just 131-3. She improved to 144-0 in the second round, which was just over three and one-half feet short of personal best. However, her third round throw was just 117-05. That left her in seventh place with Group B yet to throw and hoping that six athletes did not better her 144-0. After the first four throws in Group B, Sandra Perkovic of Croatia at 172-4 and Kimberly Mulhall of Australia at 155-0, were automatic qualifiers, Matilda Gunnarson of Sweden was in third at 148-11 and Shaunagh Brown of Britain was fourth at 147-11 . O’Brien, with two and one-half rounds remaining had dropped to eleventh and had to hope no more than one other thrower would move ahead of her. If O’Brien was feeling apprehensive imagine what Erin Peterson (Woodmere, Elmore, Oh.) must have been going through. After the first two rounds of Group B, Peterson had two fouls. With just three throwers remaining in the qualify round the fate of the two Americas was yet to be decided. Pendleton was first up but her throw of 142-7 left her just short in thirteenth place. The agony ended for O’Brien when Hristina Anagnostopoulou of Greece improved but only to 143-11, which was just one inch short of O’Brian but good enough for twelfth place and guaranteeing a sport for O’Brien in the final.

Girls Discus Qualifying
Group A
Becky O'Brien (Greely, Cumberland Center, ME) threw 144-0 to sit in seventh place. She does have a shot to make the final as they will take the top 12 (or anyone who attains the automatic qualifier of 150-11) Yuanyuan Jin of China led this group with a throw of 166-5.
Group B
Erin Pendleton (Woodmore, Elmore, OH), younger sister of recent Pan Am Junior competitor Emily Pendleton just missed making the final. Her throw of 142-7 finished her fourteenth overall. The good news is that Becky O'Brien did make it into the final based on her group A throw. Sandra Perkovic of Croatia, winning this group, has the furthest throw overall at 172-4.

Top 12 Qualify for Final (Wed. evening)

Kennedy
Cameron Tabor (Norman, Ok.) ended the suspense quickly with a an automatic qualifying mark of 63-11 ¾ in the first round of Group A, good enough for the fourth best put in qualifying. Michael Barbas (Jersey Village, Houston, Tx.) was not as fortunate in Group B where he had a nonqualifying best of just 58-7 ¼ good enough for 21st place overall. There were ten automatic qualifiers led by David Storl of Germany at 67-0 ¾, Hendrik Muller of Germany at 65-0 ¾ and Mykyta Nesterenko of Ukraine at 65-0. Nesterenko had the best mark coming into the competition at 70-0 ½ and is actually better in the discus where is has set the World Youth record of 236-0. Martin Premeru of Croatia, who qualified at 65-5 ½, is close behind at 69-8 ¾. Tabor is just the third U.S. shot putter to advance to the finals. Darius Savage from San Diego and now at UCLA is the highest placer at 10th in 2005. Like may of the weight events, the rest of the world uses a different weight than the U.S. The world uses a 5-kilo implement (just over 11 pounds) and the U.S. used the high school weight of 12 pounds. Tabor’s best high school put is 63-1 ½ compared to his qualifying round put of 63-11 ¾.

Group A
Sean Tabor (Norman, OK) got right to business and had to throw only once to qualify. The automatic qualifier is 63-0, and Sean threw 63-11.5 taking him right to the finals later on this week.

Michael Barbas (Jersey Village, Houston, TX) did not have as good a day as Tabor, finishing 11th in his group at 58-7.5 and not moving on.
The overall leader was David Storl of Germany at 67-0.75.

100 Meters
First Round
First Three in Each Heat Plus Next Five Fastest
Qualify for Quarterfinals (Wed. evening)

Kennedy
As with the boys this is the first year for four round of the 100 meters. And like the boys not a whole lot is likely to be learned in especially the first round and probably the not from the quarterfinals. Seven runners ran 11.70 or faster including freshman Ashton Purvis (St. Elizabeth, Oakland, Ca.), who won the first heat at 11.74. Erica Alexander (Clear Brook, Friendswood, Tx.) found herself in a much tougher fight and finished second to Ashlee Nelson of Britain, 11.70 to 11.74, in her heat. Nelson has a best of 11.58. Alexander’s time is her legal best this year although she has run a wind-aided 11.61. Asha Philip of Britain, the World Youth leader at 11.37, was an easy winner in 11.61 for the fastest time in the opening round.

Qualify for Quarterfinals (Wed. evening)

Kennedy
This is the first time that four rounds have been used in the World Youth Championships and so there is not a whole can be gained after the first round and probably the same will be for the quarterfinals. There were eleven heats in the first round and nine athletes ran 10.70 of faster. However, Kenneth Gilstrap (Miller Grove, Lithonia, Ga.) and Isaiah Sweeney (Hightower, Sugar Land, Tx.) were not among the nine. Both did win their heats. Gilstrap defeated Jordan Huggins of Britain, a 10.45 sprinter, 10.81 to 10.91 into a 1.3 meter per second wind. Sweeney just edge Harold Houston of Bermuda, 10.73 to 10.76 with a wind-legal 1.4 wind. Dexter Lee of Jamaica, who won the national youth championship in 10.33, had the fastest time at 10.55 with a nice breeze of 1.8, Alistair Clarke of St. Kitts ran a personal best of 10.58 with a maximum allowable wind of 2.0 and Christophe Lemaitre of France also set a personal best of 10.62 in winning his heat. One name that was conspicuously absence was the newly crowned World Youth Record holder Rynell Parson (Stevens, San Antonio, Tx.), who ran that 10.23 time in winning the U.S. National Junior championships. Unfortunately Parson was never considered for the team because he did not attend one of three national junior championship meets in 2006. You just have to ask yourself, would that stipulation, a year before the World Youth Championship, have kept him off of any other nations World Youth team?

Boys 100 Meters, Round 1
Heat 1 - An easy win for the Brit, Olufunmi Sobodu, wining in 10.71
Heat 2 - Warren Fraser of the Bahamas strided to a relaxed win (10.88) from lane 8.
Heat 3 - Newcomer Nickel Ashmeade made it look easy with a 10.70 victory. He came into the event with a 10.39 best and seems to be a finalist and, perhaps, a medallist.
Heat 4 - Allistar Clarke of St Kitts had an easy win in 10.58, fastest of the competition thus far.
Heat 5 - Another Jamaican, Dexter Lee, won his heat. And very easily. The 10.33 competitor took heat 5, running 10.55.
Heat 6 - Tse-Ching Liange of Taipei ran well in winning (10.72), with Michael Tumi of Italy the other automatic qualifier (10.84).
Heat 7 - South Africa's Patrick Vosloo, a Galen Rupp look-alike, was impressive in his 10.69 win.
Heat 8 - Christophe Lemaitre of France got a PB 10.62 in winning from lane 1.
Heat 9 - Kenneth Gilstrap (Miller Grove, Lithonia, GA), held off Jordan Huggins of Great Britain, with Gilstrap running 10.81, a tenth faster than Huggins who was in an adjacent lane.
Heat 10 - Isaiah Sweeney (Fort Bend Hightower, TX) tried to relax after leading at 85 meters, but had to "turn on the gas" soon thereafter to get the win, running 10.73.
Heat 11 - Country favorite Vaclav Zich got his nation's youth record in winning at 10.65. Joel Dillon of Trinidad was a close second at 10.65.
